School's Out for summer

(Insert loud Alice Cooper music here.)
(I thought it was Queen.  I really did.  Thanks to Alicia, who decided to de-lurk and correct me so that I don't look like an idiot!)

The Good News: As of 11:30 this morning, my kiddos will be out of school for the summer.
The Bad News: A of 11:30 this morning,k  my kiddos will be out of school for the summer.

The Good News: I will no longer be solely responsible for entertaining my 18-month old.
The Bad News: I will now be responsible for entertaining the 8 year old, the 6 year old, and the 18 month old.

The Good News: I don't have to pack lunches first thing in the morning before I've even had breakfast.
The Bad News: I now have to come up with lunches for everyone everyday, and can't cop out anymore by telling them, "Today is a school lunch day."

The Good News: No more waking up early to do the before school routine.
The Bad News: Now I have to wake up early to teach violin lessons.  (Who thought that was a good idea?)

The Good News: I am going to be the super organized, efficient, fun mom this summer.
The Bad News: I have no idea how to actually go about doing that...

The Good News: The girls will be home with us all summer.
The Bad News: I no longer have the option of sending them away to school.

The Good News: I now have helpers around the house.
The Bad News: I now have to come up with alternate times to do the errands, because I'd rather scratch out my eyeballs with a plastic fork than take all three of them grocery shopping.  ( Learned my lesson about that several times last summer.)

The Good News: Long summer nights, cookouts, camping trips, swimming pools, being outside, farmer's markets, corn on the cob, fresh tomatoes, bike riding, (but not down hills!) and lots of seemingly extra time.
The Bad News: School starts again August 23rd.

  1. I have been very surprised to find that the more I do completely distasteful activities, the more commonplace, easy, and non-stressful they become. For example, when exhusband was still here, he would wash/dry the laundry and I would fold/put away. I thought my part of the job was MUCH harder than his. Then he left and I got to do it all! I thought that doing 4 loads of laundry in an evening was a HUGE ORDEAL, and I complained about it every single Saturday night on Facebook. Now it's been months, and doing 4 or even 8 loads of laundry in a night is nothing (using a laundry room with 4 washers/4 dryers). It's barely a blip on the radar. (I wash/dry/lay out/fold all the clothes that night, but leave folding the towels/sheets and putting away the clothes until the next morning, since I don't want to go into the bedrooms in the middle of the night.)

The other one is grocery shopping. I too used to LOATHE shopping with the kids. Since I had no other option, obviously I've been doing it once or twice a week for months/years. Now, I can't even remember the last time that I dreaded going shopping. Of course I won't go shopping any more than I need to, and of course the kids still misbehave occasionally, but it's no longer a traumatic event!

I was very surprised to suddenly realize one day that I was used to laundry and grocery shopping. As one might guess, I am terrible at forming good habits. But based on this realization, my new motto is to just suck it up and do distasteful things!

  3. Wow! You captured my life in a nutshell, give or take a thing or two.

We'll get through it. We always do. I look forward to the reverse list in the fall.

  4. Ok, I guess it's time for me to come out and admit that I read your blog. You may not even remember me, but we were in the same ward when you were over in the maples. You stuck around long enough to leave an impression on me. (Good, I promise.) I break my silence, however, with the compelling need to tell you that it is Alice Cooper and not Queen that sings "School's out for Summer". Dumb reason, I know. :)

I've really enjoyed following your life through your blog. Thanks for sharing all your stories.

  6. I'm teaching Tuesday and Thursday mornings as well - ALL morning - like 8:00-1:00. That was such a bad idea on my part because I'm ALSO teaching in the afternoon on those days. Trying to figure out swim lessons with my kids and other various activities is such a pain. Next summer - they will all be in the afternoon when my kids are just pooped and it's hot and they just want to come in and sit anyway. . . then we'll have our mornings free to do fun stuff.

  7. It is a total mixed bag, isn't it??? I am always glad to let the routine go for awhile, and then I am ready for it in August. LOL Man, are we fickle or what?

  8. Alternative times to do errands...yes! I so get you on this count!

Our summer starts in another month, which gives me plenty of time to "organize" myself until then (yeah, umm, right).

HOpe your pregnancy is coming along well, and your beautiful family!!!

    xoxxo,
    Terresa

  9. This will be my reality next week. I hope I survive. And summer always ends too quickly, even with all the bad news, right?
